FOX Comedies Top PTC Hit List

If you're looking for family-friendly programming on TV, you'd do well to steer clear of Sunday nights.

That's the message from the Parents Television Council, which in its annual rankings of best and worst shows for families lists five series that air on Sunday nights in its worst list, which is headed by three FOX comedies: "The War at Home," "Family Guy" and "American Dad."

However, the activist group's top-ranked show, ABC's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," also airs on Sundays. It leads into "Desperate Housewives," which is sixth on the worst list. CBS' "Cold Case" is the other Sunday series on the bad side of the group's ledger.

The PTC says it ranks shows by their content and how appropriate they are for children, as well as their time periods and target audiences. This year's rankings, released later than in past years in order to include new shows, list only nine shows that win the PTC stamp of approval -- which PTC president Brent Bozells cites as evidence that "Hollywood does not care about families."

"That is outrageous," Bozell says of the group's apparently futile search for a 10th family-friendly show. "Network executives should be ashamed and millions of families should be offended at their actions."

Shows like "George Lopez" and "Smallville," which have made the group's best list in past seasons, don't cut it this year. Additionally, the PAX network (now called "i"), which typically placed a couple of shows on the list, no longer programs originals in primetime.

The PTC, which has led the charge in complaining to the FCC about broadcast indecency in recent years, places six FOX shows on its worst list, with "The O.C.," "That '70s Show" and "Arrested Development" joining the three Sunday comedies. FOX also gets two nods on the best list, for "American Idol" and "The Bernie Mac Show." A FOX representative says the network doesn't comment on the PTC.

Last year's No. 1 offender in the eyes of the PTC, The WB's "Everwood," is nowhere to be found. NBC's "Will & Grace" and "Las Vegas" also dropped off the worst list, as did UPN's "Girlfriends."
